SUMMARY - NEW LOCAL-RADIO CLASSICAL MUSIC PROGRAMME
‘Classical NE1fm’ is North East radio's first-ever specialist classical music show, to be presented by Rob Barnes each Sunday evening from 7 - 9pm, commencing 12 February. You can FIND the programme on 102.5 in Newcastle/Gateshead, or on-line at www.ne1fm.net/listen. You can also RECEIVE via the TuneIn app if you have iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry or Windows Mobile devices (very clear all over the world). And if you would like to RECORD the programme, you can do this with the Pro version of the TuneIn app for a one-off investment of £0.61p at current price. Space taken by a recording seems to be c1Mb per minute on my iPhone. Thankfully, the show doesn’t seem to clash with Downton Abbey or other major Sunday night TV drama – at least for now!
There will be orchestral, instrumental, choral and vocal music from the Renaissance to the present day, and also a weekly showcase composer, performer, or instrument. Requests and dedications to rob.barnes@ne1fm.net.
As the shows develop, I’m looking to invite studio guests to talk about the influence of this music on their lives - performers, conductors and fans alike, as well as the latest local classical music news and events. Enjoy the programmes – and for the story behind the story, click here.
‘CLASSICAL NE1fm’ - THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY from Rob
Some of you may know that for the last few months, I’ve been doing occasional ‘open mic’ radio hours for local community radio station NE1fm – usually of the pop/rock variety, but also some classical which I had the pleasure of presenting with Julie Gill.
NE1fm is growing and looking to appeal to a wider audience, and so, on the back of my efforts before Christmas, they asked me to submit an application to do a weekly 2 hour classical music programme. The North East has never had its own classical music show, so this would be a ‘first’ for the region. My only stipulation was that it had to be on a Sunday evening because of existing commitments during the week, and, as importantly, Sunday evening is without doubt the best time for such a programme. They agreed! So ‘Classical NE1fm’ makes its debut at 7pm on 12 February to a fanfare (so you may be able to guess the very first piece of music I plan to play!).
If you like John Cage, you should look away now, but I shall be playing some of the very best orchestral, instrumental, choral and vocal music from the Western classical music canon. I do like a good tune, you see, and I hope you’ll be delighted with my choices! And I really want you to help choose the music, so email me at rob.barnes@ne1fm.net or rmbarnes@btopenworld.com with requests and dedications.
You can find me on the Facebook page ‘Classical NE1fm’ or follow on Twitter ‘@classicalne1fm’. These two sites even talk to each other, which is amazing in itself. And please pass on news of this to your friends, other choirs and bands – in fact anyone whom you think may like to know about it. It’s a world-wide broadcast, and you would be amazed where people listen in from. I had contacts from Australia and the West Coast of America when doing the shows before Christmas – and there was of course regular comment from the Moscow branch of the Barnes family.
Happy listening!
Rob
